Hermana Ririe is HOME

After 1.5 years of serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Melanie is finally home!!!

For those who don’t know much about what serving a mission is like, here’s some info:

  • Melanie was sent to Santiago, Dominican Republic to teach the people there about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • In order to help missionaries stay focused on their ‘mission’ they are asked to leave everything behind for a period of time. This means, family, friends, cell phone, social media… life as most 18 and 19 year olds know it.
  • Melanie was only able to write home once a week (Mondays were the best day of my life for the last 1.5 years)
  • Mel had the opportunity to learn Spanish, meet lots of cool people and serve the people of the DR! She loved it!

My family had the rare opportunity to go and pick our missionary up. Generally missionaries return to their home where family and friends greet them at the airport. We worked with local and Dominican church leaders to receive permission to have Melanie released as a missionary while in the DR. I’m so glad everything worked out the way it did. It was an unforgettable experience.

Check out the video I made below (Don’t mind my insane happy cry face when I reunite with my sissy)! Pictures and more details about our trip to come. Enjoy. xoxoxo

I went to St George with my parents over President’s Day weekend. We saw Deadpool – no one warned me!! Not a movie you want to watch with your parents.

Oh! I MOVED TO BROOKLYN!!

May:

I fell in love with Brooklyn

I ate NYC Pizza everyday because I could

Dallin started a new job

June:

I celebrated my 24th Birthday… alone, in LA. #thanksjamberry

I ran into Bernie Sanders, Fred Armisen, John Stamos and Paula Abdul while participating in an event for Jamberry.

I spent some time in Utah (couldn’t keep away for too long). While I was there I was able to listen to my Grandma Lena receive her patriarchal blessing. One of the most profound experiences of my life. She died later that month which made this experience even more special.

July:

Spent 4th of July weekend in Colorado for our new niece, Coco’s blessing day. I love being an aunt. You can see a video from our trip {here}

I started a new job, I love it! #girlbossmoment

We spent a weekend on the north shore of Long Island with some friends. I love living so close to the beach.

August:

We visited Coney Island for the first time and Dallin finally got to try Nathan’s!

We went to Washington DC! See a video from that trip {here}

We said goodbye to Oscar, our family Bulldog. He was the sweetest, ugliest, most adorable puppy and we miss him.

I went through a friend breakup/reevaluation and it was really hard.

We have season tickets to NYCFC games!! Watch a fun video from a game {here}

October:

We welcomed our baby nephew, Remy, to the world. See pic {here}.

Dallin and I celebrated 4 years of marriage

I attended a networking workshop at Refinery29 which made me feel like ‘I made it’! This big city is mine for the taking! #girlbossmoment

November:

My parents came to visit!!!! You can see pics from their visit here

Witnessed the most depressing election of my lifetime. I feel like America finally let me believe that anything is possible and then gut punched me back into reality. I’m over it now. I’ll keep fighting for equality, religious freedom, freedom of speech and of the press, and for women’s jeans that actually have pockets!

To all the little girls watching…never doubt that you are valuable and powerful & deserving of every chance & opportunity in the world. – Hillz

I went to Toronto for Commodity to tour the coolest manufacturing facility of my life. I also was able to attend an event at Hearst tower for Commodity, another ‘I made it’ moment. #girlbossmoment

December:

This season in NYC is unlike any other. You can see pics from our festivities {here}

Commodity launched a new line of premium fragrances – so yummy! #girlbossmoment

And… I’m ending this worst/best year on the highest note possible… I get to see my sister in 4 days. We are going to pick her up in the DR. I am so excited I’ve had a tummy ache for weeks. I’m sure there will blog posts of the trip so stay tuned.

This year was the hardest and most rewarding year of my life. I’m really excited for 2017! I can’t wait for Donald to be impeached 😉 All jokes aside, I’m not joking (sorry grandpa), I am so hopeful for 2017.

I’ve decided not to set any New Years Resolutions this year because they always set me up to fail. However, I will be using this {goal planner} (Yes, this is a shameless plug for my friend Amanda’s new business #girlbossmoment).

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!!

I heart NY!

img_1129It snowed!!! It was magical!! Until it started to rain and turned all the snow to slush and all the gutters filled with gross trash water. I still loved it.

I finally convinced Dallin to head into the city with me for a night full of Christmas adventures! We started on the Lower East Side with some shopping in Soho. Then we walked to Union Square to check out the holiday market. Dallin had his first empanada, and claimed it to be ‘life changing’ while he was raving about it to some friends we were interrupted by a passer by because they had to know what could be so life changing.

After the glorious empanadas we caught the Q train uptown to Columbus Circle where we walked through the holiday market there and tried some of the best churros of my life, they come in a close second to Costco churros – unbeatable!!

Columbus Circle has a cool little underground shopping center called ‘Turnstyle’. Dallin had never been so we stopped by and despite my not so subtle hints Dallin did not buy me  this ridiculous tote bag.

Dallin was not impressed by Turnstyle so we high tailed it out of there to walk down 5th avenue and check out all the shop windows. I’ve heard tales of the amazing shop window displays around Christmas and they did not disappoint. My favorite was Cartier! As we made our way down 5th Ave we stopped by the tree at 30Rock. I can’t walk past this building without humming the 30Rock theme song! ‘Dum, dum, dum, dum… etc.’ Dallin hates it. Being married to me is hard.

The tree was GIANT! and it was so crowded so we snapped a picture and ran out of there to catch the subway to Herald Square to see SANTA!!! We walked through Macy’s and danced in the square before heading back to Brooklyn.

Christmas in NY is as magical as everyone says it is. I love living here. Below are some pictures from our fun night out and some other random outings we’ve had recently.

Enjoy! (Hi Grandma! This post really is for you because I know you’re the only who reads it. Love you :))

Lately

Dallin and I have been so busy lately. It feels like 2016 is flying by, it’s going to be over in a blink. We have been living in Brooklyln for 8 months now!! I can’t believe it’s been that long, it feels like we just moved here. We’re loving living here. Brooklyn is home.

I wanted to share some pics of what we’ve been up to lately and I realized – I need to take more pictures! I want to remember all the fun things!!!

I have a new baby nephew ^^^ We’ve been so excited for little baby Remy’s arrival and I can’t wait to karate chop those cheeks in January

We saw my favorite band play (again). Hive Riot is a Utah band! Both times I’ve seen them play have been in NY. I love them. Look them up if you haven’t, you’ll fall in love too!

A week or two before Halloween we went on a Ghost Tour of Greenwich Village with some great friends and I loved it! New York has so much fun history and I was eating it up. This is a picture of the ‘Friends’ apartment (although, not haunted or historical I just thought it was a touristy thing to do).

We learned all the parks in the city used to be graveyards – bodies still under there :/

We learned all of the brown street signs in the city signify that you’re in a historic district. Way cool!

We didn’t have Halloween plans until my cousin texted me last minute and told us to meet them in the city for the Halloween parade. Donna, my cousin,  her husband and two kiddos have been traveling the country in their RV for the past year. They show up every once in a while and we try to take advantage of it whenever they pop in. They are in DC now and who knows where they’ll end up next.

Our last minute costume ‘Peaky Blinders’ (literally put together in less than an hour). Thanks to my Aunt Bunny for the vintage gown and Great Grandma for the flawless coat.

While my parents were here we explored a few eats we haven’t before – I really liked the decor in the place below.

I was feeling super loved! Mom brought me some Swig cookies in her suitcase! I love a good Dirt Ball. Too bad a Raspberry Dream wouldn’t have survived the flight. I miss Swig too much!

Having my parents here was so fun. I loved showing them around Prospect Park, Central Park, Soho, China Town! I miss them already!

I finished Gloria’s new book on election day. A day that broke my heart a little. I don’t know when America will be ready for a female President, but I hope it’s in my lifetime. I want to see a President who looks like America! I want my nieces to see there are no limits for women.

I loved this book and highly recommend anything written by Gloria. She’s inspiring!

We attended NYCFC’s very first playoff game ever! They lost terribly, but at least we had this nasty bucket of chicken to comfort us.

Less than 2 months until I get to see this face tho!!!! (below) She’d kill me if she knew I posted this but that’s what she gets for leaving me for 1.5 years!

Washington DC

We had a blast in DC this weekend and as we are popping popcorn getting ready to watch the debate tonight I can’t help but feel grateful we had this experience this weekend. It was great to ‘get back to our roots’ and get some feeling for what our nation is founded on. I’ll be honest, I’m hoping this debate tonight is as entertaining as I think it’s going to be. I can’t wait!

Some highlights –

  • We saw a bunch of the museums and memorials
  • Played with our adorable nieces – Gabby, Rozzie and Coco 🙂
  • Dallin went to a BYU game
  • I went to the Peeps store with my Aunt Bunny (highlight of my trip)
  • I went to the Opera at the Nationals stadium, and LOVED it

I made a quick video to help remember the fun forever! Enjoy!! Stay tuned for pics to come.
